Annual Meeting - As part of the 2010 meeting, Andrew Balas, MD, PhD, chair of research committee, delivered a presentation outlining the Insitute's 2010 research initiatives. Funding for institutional fellowships and individual research papers focusing on specific research questions will be available by the end of the year. This year's meeting generated over 90 potential research questions, the list of which will now be reviewed and prioritized by the resarch committee. The priority questions chosen by the committee, along with an RFP will be posted in late September on the website for application. It is anticipated awards will be made by the end of the year.
The AHRI Board of Directors has approved funding for the creation and implementation of a Post Acute Continuum Registry that will allow researchers to collect, aggregate and analyze demographic, clinical and utilization information from our Industries patient databases. AHRI is entering into an agreement with the University of Texas at San Antonio. The project, thought to be the first of its kind in the post acute arena, will be headed up by Carolyn Walden, Assistant Director of Research at UT Science Health Center San Antonio.

AHRI Research Committee
The AHRI Research Committee is concerned with promoting research and scholarship related to rehabilitation and the allied health professions.
Through its annual fellowship program, AHRI Fellowships are awarded to faculty and staff from AHRI academic and industry members. These funds are provided to support analyses of industry and academic databases that will facilitate improvements in rehabilitation policy and practices.
Supporting the Mission and Goals of AHRI
The AHRI Research Committee complements and enhances the primary purposes of the organization--to promote and provide education and training for allied health professionals and to promote clinical research and development of allied health care programs. Such activities include, but are not limited to the following:
- Provide education and training for physical, occupational, respiratory and speech rehabilitation therapists and health care workers by identifying core competencies and service demands, supporting traditional education and training models and developing alternative education and training models.
- Strengthen the relationship between academic providers of education and training and industry employers of allied health professionals.
- Establish a web-based national data clearinghouse program to disseminate information on clinical research and development of physical, occupational, respiratory and speech rehabilitation medicine and other allied health care programs.
- Promote public awareness of the acute shortage of allied health professionals in hospitals and extended care facilities throughout the United States.
- Advocate for additional educational assistance for allied health professionals and for appropriate legislative and regulatory reforms necessary to respond to the acute shortage of allied health professionals.
