AHRI Board of Directors
E. Andrew Balas, MD, PhD, currently serves as the Dean of the College of Health Sciences and Professor of Community Health at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. His areas of expertise include strategic leadership for organizational advancement to achieve national impact, development of policy priorities for the production of new scientific knowledge responsive to societal needs, and application of advanced information technologies for transferring research to practice. He is member of the Board of Directors in the Friends of the National Library of Medicine, Virginia Business Coalition on Health, American Red Cross of Southeastern Virginia and the Leadership Council of the eHealth Initiative. He is an elected member of the American College of Medical Informatics and the European Academy of Sciences and Arts. As a Congressional Fellow, Andrew Balas worked on health care legislation for the Public Health and Safety Subcommittee of the United States Senate.
Oliver Borden, MS, MT (ASCP) currently serves as the Dean of School of Health Sciences, at San Juan College in Farmington, New Mexico. As the first Dean at San Juan, he successfully completed research and application for four new Allied Health Programs and has been instrumental in advocating for, designing and acquiring funding for a new Allied Health Simulation Center. Prior to joining San Juan College he served as the Division Chair/Dean of Allied Health South Arkansas Community College where he was instrumental in growing the Allied Health programs and establishing clinical sites though out a two state area. Oliver served as an officer in the United States Navy. He retired June 20, 1993, after twenty years of service.
James B. Erdmann, PhD, Associate Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs of the Jefferson College of Health Professions, Thomas Jefferson University, has been instrumental in developing programs in all professional courses of study within the college. Dr. Erdmann previously held positions of Associate Dean of Administration and Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs, Jefferson Medical College, and University Registrar. Prior to joining Jefferson, Dr. Erdmann served as Director of the Division of Educational Measurement and Research at the Association of American Medical Colleges. Prior appointments include Associate Professor of Medical Education and Educational Psychology at Michigan State University; Acting Director and Associate Director of Loyola’s Psychometric Laboratory; and Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at Loyola University of Chicago.
Susan Hanrahan, PhD, is Professor of Physical Therapy and Dean of the College of Nursing and Health Professions at Arkansas State University. Dr. Hanrahan holds degrees from the University of Kansas and Temple University. Her research interests include adolescent health, women’s health and health policy. She has just finished a 10-year board term with the Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions. She serves as Chair of the Health Policy Board for the Arkansas Center for Health Improvement, Vice-Chair for the Arkansas Tobacco Settlement Commission and Chair of the Arkansas Area Health Education Center-NE.
Mary Van de Kamp, CCC-SLP, Sr. Vice President of Clinical Operations, Peoplefirst Rehabilitation, the rehabilitation division of Kindred Healthcare, has served Kindred in both clinical and operational capacities with the primary focus of attaining clinical excellence. Ms. Van de Kamp has served as Senior Vice President of Clinical Operations, since January 1, 2009. Previously Ms. Van de Kamp served as Vice President of Clinical Rehabilitation from January 2005 to December 2008. She also served as the Sr. Director of Clinical Services from January of 2000 to December 2004. During her tenure with Kindred Healthcare, Ms. Van de Kamp has served as a technical expert for many professional organizations including AHCA, ASHA and NASL as well as the CMS supporting appropriate quality and reimbursement in post-acute rehabilitation services. Prior to joining Kindred Healthcare in 1995 Mary provided Speech-Language Pathology services across the spectrum of care in all rehabilitation settings.
CJ Hutto, RN, MHA, CPON has been a registered nurse for over 24 years working primarily in the field of pediatric hematology/oncology. He served as the national president for The Association of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses from 2001-2003. Over the past 15 years he has served in a variety of healthcare leadership roles in not-for-profit hospital-based systems in Atlanta, Dallas, and Kansas City. He currently serves as the Senior Director of Allied Health and Support Services for Children’s Mercy Hospitals and Clinics in Kansas City, Missouri. His areas of oversight includes Pharmacy, Respiratory Therapy, Occupational and Physical Therapy, Hearing and Speech, Home Care, Nutrition/Lactation, Biomedical/Clinical Engineering, and The Pediatric Advanced Comfort Care Team, a unique pediatric palliative care program.
Richard Oliver, PhD, is director and founding dean of the School of Health Professions at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Dr. Oliver is a nationally known expert in health professions and higher education. Dr. Oliver is a fellow of the Association of School of Allied Health Professions and president of the Allied Health Research Institute. He graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a BS in Medical Technology. He received his master’s of education and his PhD in education from MU. He also has worked in post-doctoral studies at the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Law.
Alan C. Sauber, Senior Vice President, Government Programs, Chief Compliance Officer joined RehabCare in 2000 as Senior Vice President, Business Development, developing the company’s unique partnerships with skilled nursing facilities. He also has served as Senior Vice President, Strategic Markets, helping to refine the company’s strategy for integrated post-acute care. Currently, Alan oversees RehabCare’s Compliance and Government Relations programs, serving as the principal liaison to CMS and legislators on Capitol Hill, and leads the company’s clinical training and education efforts.
Prior to RehabCare, Alan was COO of a rehabilitation subsidiary of Centennial Healthcare and Senior Vice President for Continental Medical Systems. He is a licensed physical therapist and holds an MBA from Northeastern University.
John Short, PhD, is President and CEO of RehabCare. A RehabCare Board Director since 1992, Dr. Short was previously Managing Partner of Phase 2 Consulting, a healthcare management consulting firm, which is now a RehabCare Company. He has been involved in the healthcare industry for nearly 40 years, serving as CEO and board chairman for numerous healthcare organizations.
Mark J. Tarr, Executive Vice President of Operations of HealthSouth, previously served as President of the Inpatient Division. At HealthSouth, Mr. Tarr has held various management positions, including Senior Vice President for inpatient operations in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Kansas; Director of Operations of an 80-bed rehabilitation hospital in Nashville, Tenn.; and as Chief Executive Officer/Administrator of a 70-bed rehabilitation hospital in Vero Beach.

Sean Elizabeth Maloney, the executive director of the Allied Health Research Institute has 40+ years of clinical and managerial experience in healthcare. Prior to being appointed to this position she served on the Board of AHRI while SVP of Clinical Research and Development during her 16 years at RehabCare. She also served as the SVP of Recruiting, initiating the company's corporate and field recruiting efforts. Prior to RehabCare, Sean, a physical therapist by training, was Director of Planning at St. Louis University Hospital and Director of Marketing for a two hospital Osteopathic Medical System.
